Foods and Supplements that Control Cellulite

What creates the cottage cheese effect of cellulite? Simply put, cellulite is caused by loose or weak skin and connective tissues that are unable to keep the fat tissues contained within their compartments. Fat tissues or deposits escape through weakened connective fibrous strands and buoy up to the surface, creating the pebbly, orange peel effect. Strong skin and muscles are the best preventive measures for runaway fat. Keeping the cell body firm and intact would mean keeping control over fatty deposits. Cellulite is formed by the creation of water pockets and fat deposits which means that the most effective avenue for controlling them is through exercise and diet. An exercise program is absolutely necessary as well as proper foods and supplementation. Certain foods known for their cell-building properties can help control cellulite.

Lung Cancer in Non -Smokers

More and more often, I come across cases of nonsmokers who develop lung cancer. My attention is always drawn to news of this nature because my husband passed away at the age of 51 from brain and lung cancer. He never smoked a day in his life.

Abdominoplasty: To Tummy Tuck or Not To Tummy Tuck

A friend of mine lost over 60 pounds by eating well and exercising. She looked marvelous except for the extra padding around the abdomen, which refused to budge, despite her exercise and diet regimen. That was when she considered a “tummy tuck.”

Smart Eating

For several years, I ate a vegetarian diet; the only problem was that my definition of “vegetarian” was too limited; I had a meatless diet, but in the regimen that I kept, there were very few alternate protein sources, like soy or fish. I ate mainly low-fat complex carbohydrates ( brown rice, whole grains, pasta, vegetables and legumes),believing that as long as I avoided fat, I was on the path to nutritional salvation. Despite my running, my weight soared. I was hungry all the time. By 5 o’clock, I felt I had been run over by a truck and more often than not, steered straight to my favorite Tim Horton’s for my almost daily fix-coffee and bagel. Those were the days I felt sanctified for not succumbing to a donut; but little did I realize then that my whole-grain bagel fared little better than a Boston Cr

The Meaning of Hunger

In the weight loss industry, hunger is a dirty word, the villain that must be stopped in its tracks; however, it is this determination to eradicate hunger that has created the worst propaganda for diets. DIET has become a dirty word, associated with pain, starvation and all things “undo-able.” But if we look at hunger more closely, we will see that villainy is only part of its heritage. Hunger is more like Edmund in “The Chronicles of Narnia.” His cravings for Turkish Delights temporarily made him succumb to the wicked Witch until he broke through the cold inertia of her spell and re-created himself anew.

Microdermabrasion: Aging in a Skin Deep Culture

As a child, I remember watching the eggwhite lady “do” my mother’s face; she came by once every two weeks to give my mother an eggwhite facial so that her skin could stay taut and firm. And it was in this way that I was introduced to the meaning of “feminine mystique”- the world of ageless skin.

Hair Loss and Supplements

It wasn’t until his mid-fifties that my father started losing his hair. I remember the boxes of lotions, creams, heating massage pads that kept coming to his house (much to my stepmother’s chagrin). But his hairline kept receding and a decade later, only a well-greased tuft remained on the crown of his head.

Sleep Deprivation and Traffic Accidents

Ten years ago, a former colleague of mine, a fine teacher and person, was tragically killed in a car accident in British Columbia. He was on vacation with his daughter who miraculously survived the accident. What happened was a classic case of sleep deprivation: my friend was anxious to make his way to a chosen destination and despite his fatigue and the fact that he had been on the road for over 6 hours, he made the decision to drive through the night. He never made it there.

Using Herbs for Weight Loss

In this world of extreme makeovers and desperate diets, there are two definitive actions that bring about effective long-term weight loss-(1) a high nutrition and high protein, low calorie meal plan and (2) consistent, regular exercise routine. Forget about magic pills that melt the fat away or sauna wraps that steam away inches. There are, however, herbs for weight loss that can supplement-not replace- healthy eating and exercise. These herbs can help increase the body’s digestive and metabolic efficiency and make easier the process of long-term health and weight management.

How To Make Sleep Your Weight Loss Buddy

My friend, Gail, has been a restless sleeper since childhood. “It’s rare that I get a goodnight’s sleep,” she confided in me several years ago. Her weight has been a problem as well, spiraling upwards of 60 lbs within the past 20 years. Like most of us, her exercise and diet plans begin with enthusiasm but fizzle out within the first month. “Just too tired to keep them going” is her excuse. It wasn’t until her doctor referred her to the Sleep Specialist that things began to change. Within 6 months, she lost 25 lbs. She began exercising and now she feels much more optimistic about her future. “I’ll get down to where I want to be,” she said. “But the great thing is I can sleep like a baby at night.”
