The Luck of the Lookout: Hunting Montana Part 1

I have had the privilege of being part of many wonderful hunts. Regardless of whether tags were filled or not, they all have special memories to me of which I find myself often reliving and enjoying. Of all these hunts, my trip to Montana will forever be branded as the best hunt of my life. I have yet to see anything come together as perfectly as it did here.

My Favorite Guns: The Weatherby 30-780 “Betty Lou”

Betty Lou is one of my all time favorite rifles. A powerhouse from Weatherby, she received her official handle by my father who compared her to “Betty Lou – the combination AK-57 uzi-radar-triple-barrelled-double-scoped-heat-seaking-shotgun” from the Bananas at Large song “The 30 Point Buck”. The gun is my Weatherby Accumark in the famed 30-378 Weatherby Magnum topped with a Leupold 6.5-20×40 Variable-X III riflescope. She is also referred to as the “AT&T Gun” for her ability to “reach out and touch someone”.

My Favorite Guns: The Winchester Model 54

The Winchester model 54 rarely receives credit for the great rifle it is. The 54 was first introduced by the Winchester Firearms Company in 1925 after 3 years of development. It was the first successful production run bolt action for the Winchester Firearms company and the start of legacy that is carried on today.

The Model 54 was released to public at the peak of run in the stock market. Investing confidence was high and disposable income was plentiful. The new rifle was sleek and beautiful and was soon taken to heart by many sportsmen. The Roaring 20′s showed great sales and interest for the new rifle, however, the party was soon over as America slipped into the Great Depression and the Roaring 20′s came to a screeching halt. Money no longer easily flowed, unemployment was rampant, and the sales for the 54 soon dropped. Winchester continued to produce the 54 through 1936 when it was replaced by the enduring model 70. During its 11 year run, a little more than 50,000 rifles were produced although the specific number is not known.

Shot Show 2006. A different perspective

When Kelsey invited me to attend the 2006 Shot Show a dream had finally come true. Nobody had to ask me a second time. I had always heard about this gigantic event and wanted to see it for myself. Friends told me “You will not believe how big it is” so I visited the official wed site to find statistics like “Over 1,700 exhibitors, 1,300,000 square feet or the size of 15 football field, and 13 miles of carpeted aisles”. I must admit, however, in spite of all the coaching and advice given to me, nothing could prepare me for the first glimpse of this show. Wow!

Scopes: The Critical Link

A gun is a mechanical device made of levers, extractors, springs, pins, and shears. Like all mechanical devices, the individual parts work in conjunction with each other to achieve a desired task. The problem with mechanical devices is they are only as good as their weakest part. A firearm is no different. If you have a bad trigger, you loose shot control. An improper stock can cause bad sight alignment. A weak spring or worn pin can result in a failure to fire. A weak shear can result in a miss fire and a poor scope can cause headaches all around.

CZ Redhead Product Review

One of the greatest benefits of my career in selling firearms is ability to view, handle, operate, and critique a vast array of guns, many of which I would probably not have the opportunity if circumstances were different. This is one such example. CZ-USA is a relative new manufacturer of firearms but is making a huge impact on the shooting world. Their biggest achievement to date has come in the area of performance shotguns with the most famous being their flagship o/u, the Redhead.

The Luck of the Lookout: Hunting Montana Part 2

We left the next morning on foot, not finding much but sign and old rubs. The elk had been here in force. Dad and I split up from Norm and Derek and took a casual jaunt up the hill from camp. We managed to stumble over 2 very nice whitetail bucks which pulled at our instincts to shoot, however, we were looking for elk and filling deer tags was an afterthought. We return to camp and little disheartened at the lack of meat for the day.

Hey Peta, Beat This!

Just about everybody has heard about PETA, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Quite simply, they are an avowed enemy of hunting. PETA is a well-funded group which acts upon emotions, not common sense or the reality of nature. Their articles brim with hatred and anger and are absolutely filled with bias and misinformation. Unfortunately, their steadfast arrogance towards anyone who disagrees with them is completely blinding. In particular, I am talking about wildlife conservation groups; whether created by hunters or not, PETA hates them.
